You can keep adding fiercer and stronger prai to your collection, but having more of them doesn’t necessarily mean having better control. If you already keep several prai, perhaps what you need isn’t another spirit, but someone who can keep the ones you already have in check.

This is where Phaya Yom comes in. He isn’t another prai to add to the altar. According to old beliefs, the Lord of the Underworld holds authority over the spirits of the dead, including those already under your care.

Ajarn Tom’s Only XL Phaya Yom Phayant

In over 10 years as an Ajarn, Ajarn Tom has made only one XL Phaya Yom phayant. He made a handful of smaller ones, around A4 size. But those were considerably simpler in both drawing and details. Nothing else of this size and level of detail has ever come from him.

Ajarn made this particular piece back in BE 2565. He spent weeks drawing, painting and writing the entire Phaya Yom by hand. He worked directly on corpse cloth and mixed Nam Man Prai into some of the darker colours.

And yes, Ajarn mixed the Nam Man Prai into the paint itself. He didn’t simply apply it to the finished painting. Some of the darker areas you see on Phaya Yom contain Nam Man Prai.

Anyone familiar with Ajarn Tom’s darker wicca should know that corpse cloth and Nam Man Prai are nothing particularly new to him. But an XL Phaya Yom that took him weeks to draw, paint and write is quite different from his usual releases.

Phaya Yom — The One Who Commands the Dead

Phaya Yom, also known as Phaya Yommarat, is the Lord of Death, King of Hell and Judge of the Dead. Those familiar with Chinese traditions may recognise Yan Wang Ye (閻王爺) as the closest comparison.

For those keeping prai, Phaya Yom holds a position quite different from the spirits that people normally collect.

Some prai are particularly fierce, and people keep certain prai specifically for stronger wicca. But regardless of how fierce they may be, traditional beliefs place Phaya Yom above them. This is why people keep him to oversee the prai already under their care. They believe he can keep them in order and strengthen their abilities.

This is particularly relevant for those who already keep several prai from Ajarn Tom’s lineage. Instead of continuously adding more spirits, they turn to Phaya Yom to manage and strengthen the ones they already keep.

Protection Against Harmful Wicca

Apart from commanding prai, people also call upon Phaya Yom for protection against ghosts, hostile spirits, curses and harmful wicca. In old beliefs, he can suppress prai or other spiritual forces that someone sends to cause harm. He can also turn the attack back towards whoever sent it.

Some traditions also say he can reverse attacks against innocent people without the innocent party suffering negative karma.

And while most people associate Phaya Yom with the dead and the underworld, his traditional effects go beyond spirits. Wealth, luck, charm, popularity, personal authority and protection are also among the reasons people keep him.
