Description
Ajarn Tay | BE 255X | Very limited pieces made | 6.1 × 4 cm
So many amulets are being sold as hardcore prai nowadays. But look at what’s actually inside. The usual powders, mixed oils and a few fragments, sometimes with an asking price that makes you wonder what exactly you’re paying for. Finding a genuine old Panneng Ngan with such hardcore materials that are almost never seen anymore is another matter altogether.
Now, pure Nam Man Prai and Prai Nuea, along with a whole carved panneng, gradook, takruts and other old prai materials, all packed into one Ngan? That’s something we hardly come across nowadays.
This Panneng Ngan comes from Ajarn Tay of Chiang Mai and dates back to BE 255X, around 15 years ago. He made very limited pieces of this nature during that period. Back then, he still had access to some of the darker materials associated with old Lanna prai wicca.
Ajarn Tay is already a well-known and respected master. But what makes this particular Ngan so special isn’t simply his name. It’s the materials he had access to back then, some of which are now virtually extinct from the amulet market.
For those unfamiliar with Ngan, it is an old occult figure associated with saneh, attraction, influence and fortune. Certain traditions also incorporate prai materials and call upon spirits for assistance. And with what Ajarn Tay packed into this particular piece, we’re looking at something far beyond the usual Ngan.
Pure Nam Man Prai & Prai Nuea
There’s Nam Man Prai, and then there’s pure Nam Man Prai. At the back of this Ngan sits a small bottle containing pure NMP, separate from the other materials. We’re not talking about the usual herbal oils with a little NMP mixed in, but the pure form. Finding old supplies with a reliable history behind them has become extremely difficult.
Even a small bottle of genuine old pure NMP is something serious collectors pay attention to. These aren’t materials you can simply buy whenever you feel like it. Having the money doesn’t necessarily mean someone will have it available.
And the pure NMP isn’t even the darkest part. There’s also Prai Nuea — actual flesh relic of the Prai. Not ordinary pong prai or cemetery soil. In the older prai traditions, practitioners believed such relics retained a close connection to the spirit of the deceased.
Certain masters sought these materials for the darker branches of prai wicca, particularly those involving spirit assistance, saneh and influence. We’re talking about materials that most people wouldn’t even want to handle, let alone keep close to them.
Yet here, we have both pure NMP and Prai Nuea in the same Ngan, together with panneng, gradook and other old prai materials. For those familiar with this side of wicca, that should already tell you quite a bit about the nature of this piece.
Panneng Ngan — Whole Carved Panneng & Takruts
The front consists of a solid, whole piece of carved panneng, not an ordinary pressed amulet with a little panneng powder mixed in. At the back, Ajarn Tay included prai murn sarn, Prai Nuea, panneng and gradook, together with takruts and other old prai materials.
Two takruts run across the dark backing, with fragments scattered throughout the mixture. The back also holds the small bottle of pure NMP.
Ajarn Tay then encased the entire amulet in a blend of Nam Man Prai and pong prai. Look closely at the photographs. You can still see the takruts, fragments and dark mixture beneath the amber-coloured casing.
There’s quite a lot packed into this relatively small Ngan. And most of it isn’t something you’d know about just by looking at the front. Nothing fancy about its appearance, but nobody goes looking for an old prai Ngan like this because it’s pretty.
Ajarn Tay & Por Sala Tan
Ajarn Tay of Chiang Mai is a direct disciple of Por Sala Tan, one of the old Lanna masters known for prai wicca, Nam Man Prai and spirit-related rituals. Por Sala Tan was particularly famous for his Five-Lady Nam Man Prai. He also possessed extensive knowledge of old prai materials and traditional ceremonies involving spirits of the deceased.
Ajarn Tay also learned from Por Noi Tan. According to accounts of his earlier years, he frequently helped Por Sala Tan prepare amulets and took part in consecrations. Likewise, Por Sala Tan would assist Ajarn Tay with the consecration of his amulets.
This close relationship also explains why some of Ajarn Tay’s older pieces bear similarities to those of Por Sala Tan and Por Noi Tan. His relationship with Por Sala Tan appears in The Thai Occult, including a firsthand interview conducted in July 2017.
Considering how closely they assisted each other back then, it’s quite possible that this Ngan also contains materials from Por Sala Tan. He may even have participated in its consecration. However, we cannot confirm either possibility for this particular piece.
What we do know is that Ajarn Tay learned directly from these older practitioners. Rather than simply copying their methods or reproducing the appearance of their amulets, he trained under them personally. During his earlier years, he also had access to materials associated with that generation of Lanna prai wicca.
The Older Batches Were A Different Breed
Here’s the thing about Ajarn Tay’s older amulets. Being a powerful master is one thing. Having access to the materials he had back then is another.
Some of his earlier batches contained materials that have become almost impossible to obtain today. Pure NMP, Prai Nuea, whole panneng and other unusual prai materials are increasingly difficult to find. This is especially true when looking for old supplies with a reliable history behind them.
And this isn’t just about Ajarn Tay. Even a master with decades of experience cannot simply recreate an older batch if the original materials are no longer available. He may still have the knowledge, chants and methods, but what happens when the materials themselves are gone?
That’s why we don’t automatically regard newer releases as comparable to these older ones, even when they come from the same master.
Within traditional prai wicca, practitioners regarded such materials as particularly potent because of their origins and close association with the deceased. This is why we regard certain older batches of Ajarn Tay as being on an entirely different level. Both the materials and their traditionally believed potency set them apart.
It isn’t about newer amulets being bad. It’s about the older ones containing things that most practitioners simply cannot reproduce whenever they want. And once certain materials are gone, they’re gone.
Why Ajarn Tay’s Older Amulets Mean So Much To Us
Long before ShogunX existed, we were drowning in debt and almost bankrupt. Two of the amulets we depended on most during that period were a one-of-a-kind Nang Kwak and Ngan by Ajarn Tay. Both contained some extremely unusual materials, including pure NMP.
After obtaining them, things gradually turned around. We entered another business, started earning properly and experienced several unbelievable strokes of good fortune. There was also one particularly serious incident where we desperately sought the prais’ assistance. Somehow, we escaped a situation that could have ruined our lives.
Those experiences eventually helped bring us into the amulet trade. Both pieces remain among our most treasured possessions, and Ajarn Tay is still one of the masters we hold in particularly high regard.
The Panneng Ngan offered here is a separate piece from that same older period. That’s exactly why we continue to pay attention to his earlier releases.
For collectors seeking something seriously dark, with pure NMP, Prai Nuea, whole panneng and the old lineage of Por Sala Tan, this kind of Ngan rarely comes around anymore.
