Sometimes it’s not that opportunities aren’t there. It’s the wrong people getting in your way, luck slipping through your fingers, or having something worth protecting but constantly worrying about losing it. And when it comes to business or career, getting the right people on your side can sometimes matter more than anything else.

Phu Lersi Techo’s Mao Shan Black & White Wu Chang Command Flag brings together five different types of magic from three traditions. Chinese Mao Shan, Indonesian Pirate Sihir, and Thai Asoon. It covers everything from guarding what belongs to you and commanding spirits to seizing luck, attracting wealth, and gaining favour from people.

And right at the centre of it are Black and White Wu Chang (黑白无常).

Black & White Wu Chang — When Even Ghosts Have to Answer

Black and White Wu Chang are among the most feared figures of the Chinese Underworld. Many traditions associate them with the Seventh and Eighth Lords. They aren’t wandering ghosts or ordinary spirits. These underworld officers capture spirits, escort souls, and enforce orders. They also have close ties to Cheng Huang Ye, the Underworld Judge.

Even troublesome spirits are said to fear them. After all, these are the ones who bring spirits in, not the ones being chased around.

But there’s another side to Black and White Wu Chang that makes them particularly interesting. Despite their connection with death and the Underworld, people also worship them for wealth, fortune, protection, and spiritual assistance.

White Wu Chang commonly carries the words 一见生财, meaning fortune upon encounter. Meanwhile, Black Wu Chang carries 天下太平, referring to peace and order. These inscriptions can vary between traditions, but Chinese folk beliefs have long linked them with fortune and underworld authority.

Here, Phu Lersi Techo draws upon their authority for attracting wealth, guarding the owner, protecting property and business, and keeping unwanted spiritual influences away.

Because attracting more fortune is one thing. Keeping what you already have is another.

Mao Shan Yin Bing Yin Jiang — Calling Upon the Underworld’s Soldiers and Generals

Then comes 茅山招阴兵阴将, the Mao Shan summoning of Yin Bing and Yin Jiang, or spirit soldiers and generals.

These aren’t Black and White Wuchang themselves. Yin Bing are the spirit soldiers, while Yin Jiang are the generals who command them.

According to Phu Lersi Techo, this part of the flag aims to summon spirit soldiers and generals to assist the owner and carry out commands.

So besides guarding and protection, the flag also summons underworld forces to assist with matters the owner wishes to pursue.

Indonesian Pirate Sihir — Taking Luck Instead of Waiting for It

The next part is Indonesian Pirate Sihir, and this one is considerably more aggressive.

The intention behind it is 抢运气抢东西, or seizing luck and things of value. Not just attracting wealth or waiting for opportunities, but taking a more forceful approach to fortune and gaining the upper hand.

Anyone involved in business, sales, or a competitive environment knows how frustrating it can be to watch a good opportunity slip away. Especially when someone else gets there first.

Indonesian Attraction Magic — Not Everything Is About Romance

Another Indonesian element focuses on attracting people of the opposite gender.

But this isn’t just about finding love or getting someone romantically interested in you.

Think about the people you deal with regularly. Customers, colleagues, superiors, subordinates, or business contacts. Sometimes the person making your life difficult isn’t someone you can simply avoid. Especially when your work or income depends on dealing with them.

This magic aims to improve personal attraction, gain favourable treatment, and build better relationships with people of the opposite gender.

For business owners, salespeople, managers, or anyone whose career involves dealing with the opposite gender, favourable treatment can make a considerable difference.

And of course, the same magic also covers love, romantic attraction, finding a partner, and improving existing relationships. Whether the owner uses it for business, career, personal relationships, or romance depends on what they’re trying to achieve.

Thai Asoon — Neither Heaven Nor Hell Can Hold It

The fifth element comes from Thai Asoon.

Those familiar with Asoon will know these aren’t ordinary spirits. According to the occult teachings passed down by the makers, Asoon are fierce, devil-like beings that never received the Dharma.

During the Buddha’s era, other heavenly beings, Brahmas, giants, and demons are said to have received the Dharma. Asoon did not.

Tradition also says that Asoon fears neither Tao Wessuwan nor Phaya Yom. Even the authorities of heaven and the Underworld aren’t something it fears.

But Asoon isn’t just about attacking or harming others.

Its intended purposes also include dominance, wealth, business, sales, protection, Metta, Maha Niyom, Saneh, and fulfilling desires. Its uses range from getting ahead in business to personal authority, charm, popularity, attraction, and gaining favour from others. There’s considerably more to Asoon than many people realise.

Phu Lersi Techo incorporated the Thai Asoon incantation alongside the other four elements, bringing its fierce nature and influence into the flag.

Corpse Cloth, Ritual Ink & Chinese Cemetery Consecration

Phu Lersi Techo hand-drew the flag on corpse cloth from a known Phi Tai Hong lady, a woman who died an unnatural death. He used corpse cloth from the same source for his other recent Mao Shan command flags.

The ink isn’t ordinary either. He prepared a special ritual blend using cinnabar and other ingredients, although he keeps the full composition private.

And just like his other recent Mao Shan flags, he carried out the final consecration at a Chinese cemetery.

With Black and White Wuchang at the centre, the summoning of Yin Bing and Yin Jiang, and corpse cloth as its foundation, the cemetery consecration is particularly fitting.

Five different types of magic, three traditions, and only four pieces made. Not exactly something you come across every day.
