At first glance, there is nothing dark about Mae Prai Nonglak. The photograph shows a 17-year-old student, neatly dressed and looking directly into the camera. Yet Nonglak’s life ended in the early 1980s from a gunshot, under circumstances that were never clearly explained.

More than forty years later, her name and photograph remain, but the full reason behind what happened to her does not. Whether it was a robbery gone wrong, revenge, mistaken identity, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, nobody today can say for certain.

A Story That Lost Its Ending

There is no complete account of what happened that day. We do not know what led up to the shooting, who was responsible, or whether Nonglak herself was even the intended target. Whatever the truth was, much of it disappeared with time.

That uncertainty is part of what makes older prai like this different. Sometimes a name survives, a photograph survives, and parts of the story survive. However, after several decades, other details simply disappear. With Nonglak, enough remained to know who she was and how young she was when she died. What disappeared was the reason why.

One of Ajarn Kitkamo’s Older Prai

Mae Prai Nonglak was not recently obtained for the purpose of making an amulet. Ajarn Kitkamo had already obtained her many years ago and kept her at his samnak together with the other prai under his care.

During those years, Ajarn Kitkamo chanted, prayed and made offerings to them virtually every day. Nonglak had therefore already spent years at the samnak long before this particular piece existed. Only recently did Ajarn Kitkamo decide to bring her out and prepare this one-of-a-kind release in BE 2569.

This is what makes older prai pieces like Nonglak different. She did not arrive at the samnak and immediately become something for release. Instead, years of chanting, prayers and offerings came first, while the amulet itself came much later.

The Student Photograph in Front

From the front, there is almost nothing dark about her. The piece carries an old photograph of Nonglak as a 17-year-old student, neatly dressed and looking directly towards the camera. Ajarn Kitkamo later added small red ritual markings around the photograph as part of the preparation.

Knowing the story behind her changes how that photograph feels. There is no frightening image or elaborate occult figure on the front. It is simply Nonglak herself, photographed while she was still alive. In contrast, the back reveals the much darker preparation behind the piece.

Prai Murn Sarn, Panneng, Coffin Nail, Sai Sin & Nam Man Prai

Ajarn Kitkamo prepared the entire back over a large red yant, then built the principal materials directly over it. A dark layer of Prai Murn Sarn forms the base of the preparation and holds together several of the important materials at the centre.

Mounted over it is a piece of panneng, together with a coffin nail and Sai Sin. These sit directly over the prepared backing rather than being hidden inside the casing. Ajarn Kitkamo also attached a small bottle of Nam Man Prai. Inside the oil itself sits a takrut, placing the written spell together with the prai oil as part of the same preparation.

The contrast between the two sides is difficult to miss. The front carries Nonglak’s student photograph, while behind it sit Prai Murn Sarn, panneng, a coffin nail, Sai Sin, Nam Man Prai, a takrut, and the large yant beneath everything. For a piece like this, the materials already say enough.

An Individual Prai, Not a Normal Batch

Older individual prai cannot really be treated in the same way as normal batch releases. Someone can write another yant. Similar materials may eventually appear again, and another casing can certainly be made. However, there cannot simply be another Nonglak.

Her name, photograph, spirit and the years she spent under Ajarn Kitkamo’s care belong specifically to this piece. Moreover, those years of chanting, prayers and offerings existed long before he finally prepared the amulet in BE 2569. Once Mae Prai Nonglak leaves, there is no second Nonglak waiting to replace her.

For those who understand and collect this side of Thai occultism, Mae Prai Nonglak is something increasingly difficult to encounter — an individual older prai with her own name, photograph and history, already kept and cared for by Ajarn Kitkamo for years before he finally decided to release her.

More than forty years have passed since Nonglak died, yet her photograph remains. Exactly why her life ended at only 17 is the part nobody can properly answer anymore.
