Think again.. It might not be what you think it is…
A problem which has been common once, this issue seems to be popping up again, with many sellers and even Ajarns, selling very cheap and affordable “panneng”.
Usually, when we hear the word panneng, we’ll usually assume that it’s from a human prai, but due to growing cost and price of these, some Ajarns and sellers are knowingly, or unknowingly, selling elephant or cow/ox bone as such. In some rare cases, it could have even be made with plaster of Paris instead. Based on experience, the thai sellers will mostly say that it’s made using elephant bones or some other animal bones, but of course some may try and convince you it’s actually prai.
To avoid damaging the reputation of dealers who may had unknowingly brought and sold these, we had on purpose used some old photos as examples, but base on the market right now, there are many like these
These are sometimes kept plain, sometimes adored with materials, but one of the key thing is, 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽
Those who had been to places like thaprachan market would had probably seen these being sold for anywhere from a few hundred baht to maybe 2-3 thousand baht, but of course, those in the business will be able to get it in bulk for much less…..
𝗦𝗼, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?
– First off, they would often look a little shiny, as opposed to prai panenng which is somewhat dull.
– Secondly, they will sometimes look a little translucent, but extremely slightly only.
– Lastly, if the side and back is visible, a easy way to tell if it’s from a elephant is by the large beehive like shapes on the back.
But overall, if it’s a smaller piece with has been stuffed with materials, it’ll be overall, very difficult to tell the different unless one is very familiar with these.
