The Hoon Payon is one of the most well-known spirit guardians in Thai spiritual practice. In the Saiyasart circle, it is often seen as a spirit bodyguard or servant—sometimes classified as a deva, sometimes as a ghost, but always a being of protection and power. Similar to how Khun Paen or Kumantong can exist in both mainstream and prai forms, the Hoon Payon also has many variations. In Japanese culture, the closest comparison is the Shikigami, but the Thai version is far more versatile—crafted from a wide range of materials such as wood, cloth, clay, wax, metal, or even sacred earth.

The word “Payon” literally means something “brought to life” by a master’s wicca. This can be a form of animal, giant, angel, or in this case—human. While some are made from simple vines, soil, or copper, others, like this Ghost Rider edition, go far deeper by actually binding a spirit into the figure, instead of just conjuring one. Through the layers of sacred material wrapped around its form, the spirit is invited, infused, and sealed within the piece—turning it into a living spiritual weapon.

For many, the most important effect in today’s modern world is its ability to repel and reflect backstabbers (小人). Beyond just esoteric powers, it has become a very practical form of protection in first-world countries, guarding one’s career, business, and personal life from betrayal and unseen harm.
