Known by many names, Wu Chang Gui—often referred to as Hei Bai Wu Chang—is one of the most iconic and revered deities in the pantheon of underworld spirits. Typically depicted alongside his counterpart, forming the duo known as Heibai Wuchang (Black and White Impermanence), this deity plays a vital role in the spiritual journey of the departed.

In some traditions, the Heibai Wuchang are unified into a single powerful being known as Wuchang Gui (also romanized as Wu-ch’ang Kuei), meaning “Ghost of Impermanence.” A devoted servant of Phaya Yom, the god of the Underworld, Wu Chang Gui is entrusted with a sacred duty: to guide the souls of the kind-hearted and virtuous through the Bridge of Troubled Water and Gui Men Guan (Gate of Hell) to register with the Emperor of the Underworld, where they are granted their karmic rewards—be it ascension to heaven or rebirth into prosperity.

Wu Chang Gui is often recognized by his signature tall hat inscribed with the phrase 一见生财 (Yi Jian Sheng Cai)—”Prosperity Upon First Sight”—a symbol of fortune and financial blessing. As such, he is widely worshipped for wealth, luck, and gambling fortune.

Though dispensing lottery numbers is not his primary role, it is well believed that Wu Chang Gui possesses the divine authority and accuracy to bestow winning numbers when deemed necessary—particularly in cases of genuine need or karmic merit. During spiritual consultations or trance rituals—where a medium is possessed by the deity—devotees may request lottery numbers. If found worthy, the deity is said to grant astonishingly precise predictions to alleviate their financial burdens.
