When looking for a Phra Ngan, one may be lost due to the vast amount of makers and types, and materials in the market. Some, like slanted, straight and bald head ngan are just different designs and patterns, while some others, like Ayutthaya and 🩸ngan are actually use to refer to different type and different classes of Ngan.
Look at any seasoned Ngan believers and you will almost certainly see at least one, from the Ayutthaya Era, which is consider as one of the best type of Ngans, which are considered accessible for most.
The term Ayutthaya Ngan is use to refer to any made during that particular Era, also known as the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
Phra Ngan was said to had first originated from Cambodia, and was classified as a mountain, or ‘Yin’ deity. Most of the Phra Ngan created during the Ayutthaya period was made with metal and has a simple design.
There are plenty of stories, misconceptions and hearsay about Phra Ngans’ nature and exact origin, and it is easily confused with Phra Chai. Phra Ngan has a near similar shape as a Buddha, but however with a pointy tip and wearing a crown. However, it is not Phra Buddha, but a mountain/ Yin deity with strong magical powers.
Phra Ngan is said to be extremely powerful, and are quick to grant wishes to their deevotees. Phra Ngan, like everything else, especially spiritual amulets, is neither Good or Bad, it all depending on how the deevotee uses it.
Some common reasons why people get Phra Ngan is to increase their personal wealth, like increasing sales or gambling luck, improving the relationship with others, and also for protection, against both the seen and unseen.
Phra Ngan from the Ayutthaya Era are often smaller in size at around 3 inches, consecrated to be worn on the belt, a common method back in the day, and larger ones like this is uncommonly seen.
Being hundreds of years old, they are often found in poor condition, with damaged or broken necks, with some being covered in gold foil or paint, and the latter should be avoided unless it came from a reputable source, as it’ll be very hard to verify the condition or genuineness of it.
